Howdy,

Say, do you start with a concept first, preliminary work and such, or are you ala prima on these character studies?

Hi Brian.
Thanks for stopping by. In this case I had a pencil sketch from a sheet of doodles I had done a couple of weeks back. I used that doodle as a model and quickly drew a simple outline on the board and started right in with the paint - no reference or preliminary work beyond the original pencil doodle - just paint over paint :)

So beautiful! The textures and the palette give the piece a lot of power. Congrats.

Thanks Nico, I appreciate that.

Definitely one of the fun aspects of acrylic (or oils for that matter) over w/c & gouache is the texture...underlying I mean. Can be fun handled rightly. In moving back and forth b/t the 2 (I go b/t oil and w/c-gouache) I found some of the new w/c grounds the most fun...Do still play around w/ acrylics some...

Can't wait to see you toss out some stuff like Pumpkin Dealer and some of the ethereal like stuff from Witching Hour with your new medium.

Thanks Hattermad.
The jury is still out on acrylics. For commercial work, when it counts, I'll stay with what I am the most comfortable - watercolour tweaked with gouache.
As for acrylics - the experiment continues :)
