Recent Sketchbook
Well, it looks like Blogger as somehow lost my last post so I think I'll just throw it up again. If it should happen to find its way back to the blog then I suppose I will have to delete one of them.
Anyway, here are a couple of sketchbook pages from a recent doodle session. At the top is an old Troll Midwife and below her is a Gnome Witch. Just some simple 3B pencil on printer paper.

Wow! Such an amazing collection of images, thank you for posting them! I saw the stunning 'Rapunzel' in a Fantasy Illustrators book and looked you up. 'Fossil' is amazing too, and 'Storm Warning' - the cackling!!
I wanted to ask you about the inspiration behind 'Muskeg'? I love his benign expression and the large hands - and the detail within the characters & trees in the foreground, contrasted with the impressionistic background. Wonderful

Hello Ashley. Thanks for stopping by. Muskeg was painted a few years ago and I don't really remember exactly what my inspiration was. The piece was a private commission and meant to be a companion picture to another one of mine entitled Scout. When I work I tend to start with the focal point and move out from there, letting the detail diminish the further away I get. I hope that helps. :)
I love the new sketches, Larry, especially the gnome witch. She has a scandinavian feel to her that really appeals to me. Your pencil work is sublime. It just continues to get better.

That's great, Larry - I've seen 'Scout' too and they are a great match, though Muskeg might be my fav of the two because I can see his face a little better.
Definitely helps! By 'meant to be' do you mean that the two didn't end up being sold together? That'd be a shame.
Ashley - the two pieces were not sold together. The client wanted to purchase Scout but I was holding her for someone else at the time. Not wanting to paint the same picture twice, I came up with Muskeg. Scout never did sell and she's still one of my favourite pictures from that period.
These are wonderful sketches, Larry. The anatomy, the value, the movement, the character...all these aspects are superb!! Very inspiring!
