Garden Pixie

A little watercolour from last month.  The drawings you have seen before and the changes were made in order to improve the design.

I had originally drawn her with a flower but I felt a lot better about the drawing when I changed the flower to a sumac twig.  I like the long thin leaves of the sumac tree because I can put them where I need them to be to complete the design that feels right to me.

Thanks again for stopping by.  More soon.

  1. Didn't the original drawing have another figure in it off to the right?

I agree, I like the rhythm of the long leaves, the long twig and the long body.

So what is this twig? Is she using it as a broom to clear leaves away to begin her spring gardening? Is it her faerie wand? Is she about to work garden magic? Is she fixing to whup on a mischievous pixie who's been making mischief in her garden? Is it the beginning of a territorial squabble with another garden pixie? Is she doing pixie quarter staff exercises? Is she doing a little pixie Mardi Gras dance? I'm waiting for the tale that must be hanging about here somewhere . . .

  2. Also, I think you might enjoy this guy's artwork -- http://tanglefootcomic.tumblr.com
It has a wit and humor I think you might appreciate.

  3. I love how your ladies are sort of bulgy and natural. No generic glamerous, stick thin models here!
    Lovely earthy colours too.

  4. Rosie - we love all shapes and sizes here at the studio. :)

  5. WOL - I think she is doing a worshipful dance of appreciation for the natural world she lives in. Think Grateful Dead concert or zen ballet.

  6. Very pretty.. How do you prevent your paper from getting bubbly?

  7. Tessa - I use 140 lb hot press paper and tape it to a wooden board. Also, I work with small brushes and don't splash a lot of water around.

  8. Then how do you make the backgrounds?

  9. Tessa - I usually try to design my pictures so there are not large areas of empty space that need large washes. If I do have a big empty sky to deal with I will try to do it in small pieces with clouds of various tones and colours. If you need to use a lot of water on your paintings you will have to stretch your paper or work on a watercolour block or use thick 300 lb paper.

  10. Tessa - I also work small. That helps too.
