The Cottage Thief - Recent Sketchbook

I've had this idea for a while now, where a giant is making off with someone's house. In the past I would have gone with whatever I came up with first and dove right into the painting. However these days I like to ruminate on things a little more and mess around with the idea. There are always variations to consider - expression, costume, posture etc. So for now, here is some of that thinking, or horsing around, take your pick.

    My very favorites are the giants in the first panel. The one that's running away with the expression of a boy that has stolen the jam jar is very funny. :)

    I like the guy on the left in the last set of sketches. His expression seems to say: "lookit me, I kin lift a house!"

    These sketches are wonderful, Larry. It's great to see the little variations in form, posture and expression you're thinking about as you seek the character and pose to use in your painting. I thin my personal favorite is the big, hairy giant on the left of the 4th page but honestly, I like all of them.

    That sounds like a very timely story Larry. I would love to see where they take all the houses they collect.

    This seems like a pretty genial lot once you get over the fact they have stolen your house.

    Christina - I think you are right. These are not mean giants, it just so happens that they take houses that don't belong to them, like a dog who picks up an old pizza crust off the street - they can't help themselves, it's who they are. :)

    Hi Larry, these are great. I'd be interested to see how the giant stores his cottage collection. Piled up carefully, or stuck in the tops of tall trees?

    These really put a smile on my face! What a fun idea! I love how happy they look, like they're just out having fun picking strawberries!

    Now you have to draw what it looks like from the inside of the cottage!
